The title of the short indie film at PinkLabel.tv called La Limpia is literally translated as “the cleansing” but the more nuanced translation is a specific ceremony that is a “ritual of release” to get rid of negative energies and turn one’s luck around. This film stars two non-binary performers, Ramses Rodstein (who also directed) and La Muxer Diosa. Both are brujxs, which is a gender-neutral variant of brujo/bruja which is Spanish for witch. Bruxjeria refers to a culturally-specific magic system which combines traditional African and Amerindian magic and religion with elements of Roman Catholicism. In other words, witchy business is gonna go down in this film. The stage and mood are set and it’s clear that Santa Muerte will be the focus of the ritual, as statuary featuring her plays into the décor. She is a personification of death and is associated with healing, protection, and safe delivery to the afterlife by her devotees. Santa Muerte is also revered and seen as a saint and protector of LGBTQIA+ communities in Mexico.

The limpia ceremony begins as Ramses smudges and purifies the rope-bound La Muxer Diosa and symbolically removes the bad energy with an egg and cuts the ropes to symbolically free them from whatever icky stuff they just got rid of. The room is lit in blacklight and La Muxer Diosa is on the table getting blacklight-reactive neon wax dripped on them by Ramses, who looks fine AF in black satin. The scene transitions to a red-lit room where both are quickly wearing less clothing. Ramses works over La Muxer Diosa with a crystal toy and their tongue and an awesome trans-pride strap-on toy. The tables turn and it’s Ramses’ turn to get fucked next. Watching these two people fuck is joyous and life-affirming. Also I like hairy vulvas, so I’m in luck here.
