Cybersquatting has long been a problem. Companies have had to fall back on trademark laws to prevent people from registering domains under their brand name. But in the end it could still be a costly legal battle.
GoDaddy, however, uses a system called AdultBlock to help with that. AdultBlock restricts the registration of exact match trademark names by unauthorized third parties
In other words, using this service it will restrict anyone from being able to register your brand name as a .xxx. However, Godaddy is upgrading the service to AdultBlock+ where it will also block the domain registration on all of the following domain extensions:
- .XXX
- .PORN
- .ADULT
- .SEX
Currently, AdultBlock is only available to existing .XXX block holders, however, you can now log into your Godaddy account and upgrade to AdultBlock+. Converting your existing block does not require any re-validation, however, you must renew your existing block before expiry date.
In other words, upgrading won’t change anything, as long as you upgrade before your initial block is set to expire.
This enhanced blocking (AdultBlock+) restricts registration of exact match trademark names across all four adult TLDs (.XXX, .porn, .adult, and .sex) and extends the blocks across an unlimited number of possible look-alike variations (homoglyphs) and common typographical errors. The addition of this enhanced protection prevents third parties from registering any confusingly similar versions of your marks.
